CRIMINAL OFFENSE, AND DOWN-RIGHT OFFENSIVE

In the weeks following Baruch Goldstein's murderous attack on Muslim worshipers in Hebron, several Israelis were arrested and charged with the criminal offense of "hizdahut im ma`ase plili", identifying with a criminal act. Those found guilty, such as Arye Bar-Yosef, whose appearance on Israeli television blowing a ram's horn and extolling Goldstein's virtues brought him to the public attention, were taken to court and fined. According to this report, their actions were regarded as so serious a crime that even Israeli radio would not repeat what they had said for fear of prosecution.

Today, less than a week after Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction launched a murderous attack against Israeli soldiers, Israeli Knesset members and so-called "left-wing" figureheads went out to Gaza to demonstrate their support for the old terrorist.

I hope that the police and courts will react the same way to this action as they reacted against the supporters of Goldstein. I would go so far as to say that given that Arafat is the commander-in-chief of the Fatah, what happened today was an act of treason and should be dealt with accordingly.

There are no words to describe what I felt at the sight of Avneri embracing Arafat the mass-murderer. Perhaps Gaza is the only place where Avneri can really feel welcomed now. He's certainly unwelcome in most parts of Israel.

NONSENSE

Now I'm worried. When the best the Israeli government can come up with is a ludicrous statement like "We shall dispose of Arafat some time but don't ask us when" I know that the ra'iis is peeing himself laughing. You either just do it or don't. We don't need public statements; we need concrete (and cement) action.

I hope that the whole Arafat thing was just a diversion to take attention away from the real decisions being taken, but I fear that it wasn't.

ANNA LINDH, ShR"Y

I could find a no more fitting tribute to slain Swedish foreign minister than this historic report from Islam On Line.
